Hyundai Teases Ioniq 2 Concept Ahead Of IAA Mobility Show In Germany
Hyundai is planning to bring a new concept car to the auto show at the heart of the German auto industry. The Korean automaker isn’t saying much about the car, but we can see in the teaser images that it’s going to be something interesting.
It appears to blend several current Hyundai and even Genesis models into one new shape. The teaser shows a vehicle that will be new but also familiar, and we’ll see it in full the second week of September.
Teaser Campaign Starts Now
If you’re releasing a vehicle these days, even a concept car, it’s not just about the reveal. You need to grab the attention of enthusiasts like you (and us) for as long as possible. Enter the concept teaser campaign, where Hyundai has dropped these images and will continue to trickle out more sets before the big reveal on September 9.
We should get a bit more information with each teaser, and as we piece them together, we should get a pretty good idea of what the entire car will look like. Turning to the brand’s existing models will help suss all this out, too. Heck, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
With this car, for example, we can tell that it will have a curved nose that looks a lot like the front end of the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The streamlined sedan cuts through the air incredibly well. It’s also a very handsome car, so it’s logical that Hyundai would want to keep the look in the family. This one, though, looks taller than an Ioniq 6.
At the rear, you can see a large ducktail spoiler and a series of curves that give vibes of the Genesis GV60. It’s not quite the same, but it’s also not far off. The rear shots give away that this will be a hatchback, though they don’t show if it will be a smaller hatch or a crossover. Presumably, it will open like a normal hatch, but the teaser doesn’t show enough cut lines for any real vehicle.
The cladding over the wheel arches looks integrated, and it’s body color, but Hyundai won’t fool us. Cladding is cladding. And cladding means crossover. And that leads us to a concept version of the forthcoming Ioniq 2.
Ioniq 2 Likely To Share Much With Kia EV3
This car is almost certainly going to be the concept car for the Hyundai Ioniq 2 we’ve already spotted testing in Germany. The car is Hyundai’s competitor to cars like the ID.2, but with the brand’s unique style and e-GMP electrical architecture.
The Ioniq 2 will come with a brand-new infotainment system, raising the bar for Hyundai’s in-car tech. It will also come with features designed to impress like new ambient lighting and vehicle sounds that are linked to the drive mode.
While this will use E-GMP, it will probably be the 400V version. That will likely be necessary if Hyundai is chasing a sub-$30,000 price tag as we expect.
Kia’s EV3 already uses that platform, and offers 58.3 and 81.4-kilowatt-hour battery packs. It manages up to 372 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, producing 201 horsepower with front-wheel drive.
Hyundai will unveil this concept car on September 9 at the IAA in Munich. After that, a production version will probably arrive, at least at an auto show, shortly before the end of the year.
