Genesis Ends Production Of Electrified GV70 For The US: Report
Earlier this month, internet sleuths discovered that the Electrified G80 had been removed from Genesis’ customer-facing website, leading to assumptions that the Korean luxury marque has quietly killed the nameplate. Genesis confirmed the news, citing various reasons, not limited to weak demand and changing consumer preferences. As it turns out, the sleek sedan isn’t the only Genesis EV to meet the axe – if we’re to believe a report from Korea.
According to Business Korea, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) has stopped making the Electrified GV70 since June of this year. It went on to say that the suspension of its production is permanent. The Electrified GV70 is, of course, Hyundai’s first US-built EV. However, numbers show that American buyers aren’t exactly accepting the model as Hyundai Motor would like it to be.
CarBuzz contacted Genesis regarding the Electrified GV70’s status. We will update the post if new information becomes available.
Genesis EVs Are Very Unpopular Right Now
Looking at the numbers, it’s easy to spot the slow demand for Genesis EVs. According to data compiled by Cox Automotive, Genesis only sold 2,450 EVs during the first six months of the year – down by nearly 25% compared to its figures during the same period last year. To put that in perspective, Dodge, which only sold the highly unpopular Charger Daytona EV, outperformed the entire Genesis brand in terms of BEV sales, recording 4,299 units sold from January to June 2025.
Even the data from HMMA, as reported by Business Korea, reflect similar numbers for the Electrified GV70. From January to July 2025, only 1,367 units were produced by the company, down 18.3% compared to last year. March output hit just 93 units, and July deliveries fell to 15 units, the lowest on record. The business publication also cited other reasons for Hyundai pulling out Genesis Electrified GV70 production from HMMA, including the end of federal tax credits, high production costs, and shift in consumer demand.
The GV60 Will Become The Only Electric Genesis On Offer
Of course, Genesis is aware that consumers are choosing hybrids over EVs, especially in the luxury segment – a strategy that Lexus has proven to be effective at the end of 2024. In April, the automaker confirmed the move to sell more hybrids instead of EVs. However, it’s important to note that Genesis has a different strategy in mind, and plans to do it differently from its rivals by selling extended-range EVs. The automaker has yet to introduce such a model in the US, but prototypes have already been caught while testing in public.
The Electrified GV70 is still on display on Genesis’ website right now, even earmarked as a 2026 model year – a mid-cycle refresh was introduced late last year. It’s unclear when or if it will be removed from the lineup. If it does, then the GV60 will remain as the sole EV offering of the brand, which will then be joined by the plug-in hybrid/EREV GV80 and GV70 – the first to arrive in America of their kind.
