Audi S Line Models Explained: More Show, Same Go

With automakers constantly changing naming systems, engine names, and trim levels, it’s hard to keep up. Audi is a prime example, changing from simple engine designations, such as 2.0 TFSI (which was a 2.0-liter gas engine), to names like 35 or 55 TFSI. We know it’s not a 55-liter engine, but what is it? Audi also has lots of additional packages available, which are often confused with trim levels. One of the most popular one is the Audi S line pack. While this is an available package on some models, other models come as an S line by default.

Even the S-line pack varies between models, down to differences between sportbacks and coupes of the same line. In this post, we’ll break it down and explain it better than the Audi website to help you understand the Audi S line meaning, the difference between S line and S/RS models, and how much it costs to add it.

What Is Audi S Line?

Audi S line is simply an available package on certain mid- to high-range Audi models. The S line package has cosmetic upgrades to make cars look more dynamic, but it is purely aesthetic and performance is not altered. It’s similar to BMW’s M Sport package, or the AMG-line pack from Mercedes. In most cases, adding this pack will bring bigger wheels, black badges, a lip spoiler, and upgraded seats.

Audi S Line Vs. Audi S And RS

This is a common comparison, but it’s not accurate. S line is a package, while S and RS are Audi Sport models. S line is only available on non-performance cars since Audi Sport models already have most of the upgrades, or better ones, to genuinely improve performance. Think of S line as a premium trim package for everyday luxury cars, S models as mid-range performance models, and RS as full-fat performance cars.

This table shows the differences throughout the 2025 Audi A3 model line, and this is representative of the whole range of A, S, and RS cars by Audi. Adding an S line package to any base car gives it some parts that seem functional, like the lip spoiler and side skirts. However, these do very little in the way of downforce and aerodynamics, so 0-60 mph sprints are not any quicker, and the handling is identical to a car without the pack.

Audi S Line Plus Exterior Changes

Audi A4 S Line Package: $2,350

Above, from left to right, we can see a normal Audi A4 Premium Plus alongside the same model equipped with the S line plus package.

On this particular Audi model, the package adds the following:

  • 19-inch five-spoke bi-color alloys
  • Black Audi rings and model badges
  • Black mirror casing and side skirts
  • Black rear lip spoiler
  • Dark chrome exhaust tips

As mentioned earlier, the S line package is only available on certain Audi models. The entry-level Audi A4 Premium does not have an option to add it, but the Premium Plus and Prestige do. It costs $2,350 for both, but it is a significant makeover. Upgraded wheels, black finishes, and red brake calipers add aggressive styling cues that could be mistaken for a true performance car. It has all the looks without the extra expenses of buying and running one.

Audi S Line Plus Interior Changes

The following interior features apply to the Audi A4 with the S line package:

  • Leather/Dinamica seats with S logo
  • Carbon inlays from RS models
  • Stainless steel pedal caps
  • S logo on the steering wheel

The cabin is also treated to a host of upgrades, most notably more premium seats with the S logo. Brushed aluminum finishes are switched for carbon trims like in the RS models, and the steering wheel gets an S badge at the bottom. The interior differences aren’t life-changing, but the finer details make it seem more premium.

Small, comfortable, packed with tech – the Audi S4 is pretty quick, too. So is there a catch?

Other Audis With S Line Upgrades

To complicate things, different models get different variations of the S-line features. Top of the range models like the 2025 Audi A6 and A8 don’t have the option. Instead, the A6 has an optional black optic sport package ($1,800), which costs slightly less and adds bigger wheels, black window surrounds instead of chrome, and lowered suspension for a more engaging drive. The Audi A8, being a flagship model, is already equipped with S line as standard, but not with black badges or S-line seats. The black optic pack on this adds costs a whopping $2,600 for bigger wheels, gloss black exterior trim, plus black calipers all around.

Where things get really weird is on the A5 range. The Audi A5 is available as a coupe or sportback, both of which have different options. On the 2025 Audi A5 Sportback, it has the same S line plus package ($2,500) as the A4 above. However, the Audi A5 Coupe has a black optic package ($2,350) which is similar to the S line pack on the A4, except it only changes the inlays inside to dark aluminum. To get the upgraded seats and stainless steel pedals, an S line interior pack ($500) needs to be added, which swaps out the inlays for brushed aluminum inlays.

Is The Audi S Line Package Worth It?

Since the S line package is purely cosmetic and doesn’t add value in terms of performance, it’s down to personal preference. Replacing shiny chrome for gloss black might appeal to younger audiences, while older generations grew up with chrome being a luxury finish. Generally speaking, the S line package adds a lot of upgrades for a reasonable price. That said, S line alternatives on cars further up the range, including the black optic pack on the A8, ask for a lot of money for very little in return.

What is Audi S Line?

Audi S Line is a cosmetic package available on mid- to high-range Audis. It typically includes larger alloy wheels, black badges, dark chrome exhaust tips, red brake calipers and upgraded leather seats. It does not affect power outputs or performance.

What is the difference between Audi S and S Line?

Audi S line is simply an appearance pack, while Audi S is an Audi Sport model. Audi S models, such as the Audi S3, are mid-range performance cars with bigger engines and higher outputs, but sit below full-fat Audi RS performance cars.

Is TFSI better than S Line?

TFSI means it is a gas turbocharged engine, whereas S line is a trim package changing the appearance of vehicles. These two badges, then, apply to very different things.
