Ford’s Next Classic Car Revival Will Be The Mustang Mach-E Saga All Over Again

Key Takeaways

  • Ford confirms that the new Capri will be unveiled on July 10.
  • The iconic coupe will become an EV and likely a crossover.
  • Expected to be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform and will likely arrive as a reskinned ID.5.

Ford has announced the official reveal date for the new Capri, its all-electric coupe-crossover developed with assistance from Volkswagen. The Blue Oval has confirmed that the Capri will arrive on July 10, verifying earlier reports about the revived nameplate. The automaker revealed the launch date in a most unusual manner. A cryptic fake advert in the UK’s Classic Car Weekly magazine promotes Comeback Cars, a fictitious business.

The ad, littered with nods to the Capri sports car, contains a line that reads, “We promise to return your car fast, back from its original glory EV-ERY time.” That all but confirms the new Capri will debut as a fastback coupe. The advert also invites you to send the word ‘COMEBACK’ via WhatsApp to a phone number. If interested, try it by messaging +44 7458 197899. Using a classic car magazine is rather clever. Ford is hoping to appeal to fans of the original Capri, but the new model will be a far cry from the original.

A Very Unusual Teaser Campaign

CarBuzz tried it and was greeted with several prompts and messages, including the July 10 reveal date. Some of them are somewhat unusual, though; “‘When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.’ Now throw these images in the online sea and find out who follows…”

So, what else do we know about the Capri? To start with, it will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform. This platform also underpins the new Explorer EV, which is closely related to the Volkswagen ID. 4. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that the Capri will be mechanically identical to the Volkswagen ID.5, a coupe-style crossover that isn’t offered in the United States.

What Do We Know About The Capri?

The Capri will be the third Ford crossover to adopt a sporting name from the past, following the Mustang Mach-E and the Puma. Given that the new Capri will essentially be a reskinned ID. 5, we expect the Ford to share its electric drivetrains. In the UK, there are several options to choose from, including the high-performance GTX. This variant offers 295 horsepower, allowing for a 0-60 mph sprint of 5.4 seconds. That’s respectable, but it won’t convince Capri fans.

Smaller EVs are key to Ford’s success.

Putting this name on a battery-powered crossover will surely anger Ford enthusiasts, much like the Mustang Mach-E did when it arrived. Whether it mimics the success and popularity of the original remains to be seen, but we wonder if gearheads will dream of owning the new one. It’s worth noting that the original Capri was sold in the United States, albeit as a Mercury. The first two generations were the same as the European Capri, but with the third model, Ford chose to base the Mercury Capri on the Mustang. Given that neither the ID.5 nor Explorer EV is available Stateside, we don’t expect the Capri to be offered in the United States.
