Lexus Sport Concept Debuts, Previews Next-Generation Luxury GT Car

Lexus has just brought a new concept to The Quail as part of Monterey Car Week. The Japanese automaker isn’t saying much of anything about the car, instead letting the Lexus Sport Concept’s design do the talking. And that design says volumes, with a blend of the sleek styling of the LC, the sharper looks of the LFA, and plenty of futuristic details that make us optimistic that something like this will come to market. Since the luxury brand calls it “a vision for a next-generation sports car,” Lexus just might fulfill our wishes.

Concept Car Is A Preview Of Lexus Design

The company describes the Lexus Sport Concept as a “progressively styled, future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design.” It also said that the wide and low profile “blends dynamic and emotional elements.” Yes, that’s vague designer speak, but Lexus is being incredibly vague here.

Fortunately, we don’t need to rely on them for more information. That’s because we’ve seen prototypes of this car, or a model that looks very similar to it, already. The car we’re expecting to be called the LFR has been spotted testing around Germany and on the Nürburgring to show that the company is serious about performance.

This show car, though, along with the Toyota GR Sport prototype that Toyota brought to Goodwood earlier this summer, hints that there could be two supercars. They share details like the vents behind the front wheels and the rear shoulders. They also have very similar proportions.

One other thing the two cars have strongly in common is the sound of the engine. We got to hear that twin-turbo V8 sound earlier this year on the road. It sounds almost identical to the (admittedly heavily disguised) engine sound in the video Lexus launched with this show car. You can watch that video at the end of this post.

A Stunning Blend Of Lexus Old And New

The car Lexus has on display comes with plenty of Lexus family design features. The L-shaped accent light, for example, is a brand hallmark. The design of the nose of the car itself, including the front vents, brings to mind the ultra-rare V10-powered LFA.

This car does seem to be sleeker than the prototype we’ve spotted before. The roof is more arched, and it flows more smoothly into the rear quarter. A look that’s definitely more LC-inspired than the camo cars appeared to be. Frankly, taking anything you can from the Lexus LC is a good idea, because it’s one of the best-looking cars on the road.

We can see some details in the concept, like the carbon ceramic brake discs and some chunky calipers. We’ve heard reports that the hybrid V8 powertrain could make 900 horsepower total, with 720 of those from the gas engine alone. That would make this the most powerful Lexus ever, by far, and miles ahead of the 552 horsepower of the V10 LFA.

The Toyota version of this car is going racing. Toyota brought the GT Concept to Goodwood with a production version and a race car version, which came with a gutted and caged interior with racing spec tires and a wing that is certainly not bound for a production car.

This is still officially a concept, so anything beyond this appearance is speculation on our part. But based on the facts we know, we’re very confident something extremely close to this will be on the market. Probably next year.
